On Sunday, September 22, the UN General Assembly approved the main document of the Summit of the Future, despite Russia's protests, according to Voice of America and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The document was approved despite resistance from the delegations of Russia. A representative from Russia attempted to introduce amendments, threatening to withhold support for the agreed document.

Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin put forward an amendment regarding the principle of non-interference. According to him, this was supposedly important for Global South countries to prevent the collective West from imposing its will on them.

Vershinin labeled the draft document as hypocritical and criticized Secretary-General António Guterres for allegedly disregarding all suggestions in the draft. He warned that if Russia's amendment was not supported, they would distance themselves from the consensus approval of the document.

In contrast, Russia's amendments were rejected by 143 votes. The President of the General Assembly, Philemon Yang, announced the Pact's adoption and signed it.

What does the Pact for the Future contain

The 42-page document outlines the intentions of countries to address global issues, ranging from military conflicts and climate change to artificial intelligence and the reform of the UN and global institutions.

In particular, it includes sections on Sustainable Development and Financing for Development, International Peace and Security, Science, Technology, Innovation, and Digital Cooperation, and Youth and Future Generations.

In the section on peace and security, it is noted that the scourge of war is taking on new and more dangerous forms. Today, the world is closer to nuclear confrontation than it has been since the end of the Cold War.

The pact also states that countries commit to acting collectively to support and restore international peace and security on land, at sea, in space, in cyberspace, and other emerging domains. This is necessary to more effectively counter interconnected global threats and fulfill the promises contained in the UN Charter.

Reaction of President Zelenskyy

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy congratulated the adoption of the Pact for the Future. He emphasized that a secure future is only possible with the end of the war in Ukraine.

The head of state noted that despite all obstacles, including attempts by Russia to disrupt the adoption of the document, the world managed to unite around a vision for a just and secure future.

According to the president, this future can only be realized by concluding the largest war in Europe since World War II, in line with the Peace Formula based on the goals and principles of the UN Charter, as well as the objective need for global security.

"The world needs leadership and determination. Ukraine is ready to work with all responsible countries on this path," he added.

Zelenskyy's visit to the US

On Sunday, September 22, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in the US for a working visit. During his trip, the head of state will hold a series of meetings, including those related to the General Assembly.

Specifically, he plans to visit a factory that produces 155mm caliber shells, some of which are supplied to Ukraine to counter Russia.

Zelenskyy will also meet with presidential candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.

Peace Summit-2

The second peace summit will take place after the development of a joint peace plan based on Ukraine's 10-point Peace Formula. It is possible that the meeting could occur before the end of 2024.

According to President Zelenskyy, the peace plan is already prepared, and the first person to review it will be US President Joe Biden.
