Russia uses new developments tested in war with Ukraine against NATO countries - ISW

Russia is employing new technological developments in its war against Ukraine. These same innovations are now being used against member states of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), reports the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
Analysts from the institute noted that during the war, Russia has been developing and enhancing its drone capabilities, particularly improving drone resilience to electronic warfare (EW) and advancing its own EW technologies.
Throughout 2024, NATO command and member states have increasingly issued warnings about Russian sabotage and hybrid operations targeting the Alliance's member countries.
"Reports that a NATO member state is struggling to combat likely Russian reconnaissance drones demonstrate the need for NATO states to further develop their defensive capabilities as Russia continues to use its experience on the battlefield in Ukraine to innovate new technologies," the report states.
Drone incidents in NATO countries
Over the past year, several NATO member states have reported incidents of surveillance involving drones, allegedly of Russian origin.
In January, unidentified drones were repeatedly detected over the military base in Schweising, Germany, where Ukrainian Armed Forces personnel are being trained.
Additionally, unknown UAVs were spotted in December of last year over the UD military base Ramstein in Germany, as well as over facilities belonging to the defense contractor Rheinmetall.
Meanwhile, Russia has begun deploying a new type of drone on the battlefield in its war against Ukraine, which is resistant to electronic warfare interference.
Furthermore, North Korea is set to produce combat drones in collaboration with Russia.
