Pentagon limits US role in Ukraine security guarantees

The US is not ready to become the main guarantor of Ukraine's security. European allies will have to take on most of the commitments, Politico reports.
The US plans to take only a minimal part in Ukraine's security guarantees, so Europe must assume a key part of the responsibility. US Deputy Secretary of Defense Elbridge Colby voiced this position during a meeting with European military leaders.
Representatives from the UK, France, Germany, and Finland asked Washington to explain what kind of assistance it is prepared to provide in the military and aviation spheres to support a possible peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia.
Six interlocutors of Politico among American and European officials confirmed the discussions that took place at a meeting with the Pentagon and an extraordinary NATO summit.
Such statements are causing concern among allies. The main reason is US President Donald Trump's policy of shifting responsibility for Ukraine's security guarantees to European countries.
Security guarantees for Ukraine
After talks with Russia's Vladimir Putin on August 18, Trump announced preparations for a meeting between the leaders of Ukraine and Russia.
On August 18, a meeting between the presidents of Ukraine, the US, and European leaders took place at the White House. The key topic of the talks was security guarantees for Ukraine. It is currently known that allies are considering providing them under Article 5 of NATO, but outside the Alliance.
Meanwhile, Trump refuses to deploy American troops in Ukraine, but at the same time talks about possible air support for Kyiv within the framework of a future agreement with Moscow.
The Kremlin, in turn, rejects the idea of security guarantees for Ukraine without Russia's participation and insists on Kyiv's neutral status. Earlier, Moscow stated that it allegedly agrees to security guarantees for Ukraine. But they must be provided on an equal basis with the participation of China, the US, and several European countries.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has already explained why China will not become a security guarantor for Ukraine.
