Footage has emerged online showing extensive damage to Russia's VNIIR-Progress plant in Cheboksary following a Flamingo missile strike. Russian protective structures and anti-drone nets proved ineffective against the attack, according to ASTRA.
Destroyed buildings and ineffective defense
Published photos show the aftermath of a precise missile strike, with one of the facility's buildings completely destroyed. Anti-drone nets, which were intended to protect the site, can be seen stretched directly above the heavily damaged structure.
To support the protective system, Russian forces built special towers around the plant. According to OSINT analysts, around 15 such structures can be identified in the images. Notably, the towers were not present at the facility in 2025 and were installed later, specifically to support the protective nets. However, the large-scale engineering effort proved useless against the Ukrainian missile strike.
At least three people were injured in the attack on the strategic facility. The successful strike and the casualties were confirmed by Chuvashia head Oleg Nikolayev and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

What the plant produces
VNIIR-Progress is a critical part of Russia's military-industrial complex. The company specializes in producing high-tech electronics for the Russian military, including satellite GNSS receivers and jam-resistant antennas for Glonass, GPS, and Galileo navigation systems (Kometa modules).
These components are key elements in Russian weapons systems. They are widely integrated into Shahed-type kamikaze drones, guided aerial bombs equipped with UMPK (Unified gliding and correction module) kits, as well as Iskander-M ballistic missiles and Kalibr cruise missiles.
A series of attacks on the Cheboksary plant
The defense enterprise in Chuvashia has already repeatedly been the target of Ukrainian strikes. On the night of November 26, 2025, unidentified drones attacked Cheboksary, causing a fire at the military plant.
The scale and range of the attacks later increased significantly. During a large overnight strike on May 5, 2026, Ukraine's Defense Forces used advanced new weapons.
According to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Flamingo missiles were launched at the plant in Cheboksary. The missiles traveled more than 1,500 kilometers before striking workshops producing navigation and automation systems for the Russian military.
The same attack triggered unprecedented concern deep inside Russia's rear areas. That night, missile alerts were issued for the first time as far as 2,000 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, with airstrike warnings declared in at least 18 Russian regions, including the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug.
