On the night of May 5, missile alerts were announced in at least 18 regions of Russia. One of the regions is located 2,000 km from the border with Ukraine, according to Russian Telegram channels.

Notably, this night marked the first time a missile alert was declared in the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug, as the region's governor, Ruslan Kukharuk, wrote on his social media.

The alert has now been lifted. It is noteworthy that the region is located 2,000 km from the Ukrainian border.

Telegram channel ASTRA notes that missile warnings also affected Astrakhan, Bryansk, Kaluga, Kurgan, Nizhny Novgorod, Orenburg, Oryol, Sverdlovsk, Tula, and Chelyabinsk regions, as well as Penza, Bashkortostan, Mordovia, Tatarstan, Udmurtia, and Perm Krai.

In total, during the evening and night of May 4–5, restrictions were imposed at 18 airports. These included Volgograd, Izhevsk, Kazan, Nizhnekamsk, Nizhny Novgorod, Orenburg, Orsk, Penza, Perm, Pskov, Samara, Saratov, Tambov, Ulyanovsk, Ufa, Cheboksary, Cherepovets, and Yaroslavl.

Meanwhile, Leningrad region Governor Alexander Drozdov wrote on his social media that air defense forces had allegedly shot down 18 unknown drones. At the same time, a fire broke out in the industrial zone in Kirishi. No further details are available, but OSINT channels believe an oil refinery may have been attacked.

Moscow came under attack overnight as well. Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that at least two drones were shot down — one approaching Moscow, and the other, apparently, right in the Russian capital itself.

Where the missiles hit

The epicenter of the missile threat was the city of Cheboksary in Russia's Chuvash region.

According to OSINT channel reports, the VNIIR-Progress plant was hit by missiles, after which a fire broke out. This facility manufactures navigation equipment and components for drones, as well as for cruise and ballistic missiles.

In addition, some channels speculated that the strike on the facility could have been carried out by Ukrainian "Flamingo" missiles.

The ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia

All of these events are taking place against the backdrop of a conversation last week between Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, in which Putin stated that he was ready to announce a ceasefire for Victory Day.

However, no one has actually approached the Ukrainian side with these details. Meanwhile, on May 4, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that Putin had ordered a ceasefire for May 8–9.

Notably, this came about half a day after an unknown drone flew practically to the center of Moscow, damaging a building in the Russian capital. And all of this is happening ahead of the parade that Putin wants to hold on May 9.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, on the evening of May 4, stated that human life is more important than the celebration of any anniversary. For this reason, he announced a ceasefire that will begin on the night of May 5–6.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha emphasized that Kyiv's proposal is a genuine offer to end the war, and May 6 will show whether Russia wants that.
