Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated that the ceasefire announced by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for the night of May 5–6 is a proposal to end the war. And this date will show what Russia truly wants, according to the minister's post on X.
Sybiha emphasized that the world cannot wait for parades or holidays. If Moscow is ready to halt hostilities, it can do so as early as the night of May 5–6.
"Ukraine is ready: at midnight from May 5th to May 6th. This is a serious proposal to end the war and turn to diplomacy," the foreign minister wrote.
He added that he is asking all of Ukraine's partners, all peace‑loving nations, and all international organization headquarters to support this call for a cessation of hostilities.
Summing up, Sybiha said that during this period, it will become clear what Russia really wants.
"May 6th will show whether Moscow is serious and what it actually wants — peace or military parades," the minister concluded.
Russia wants a ceasefire for Victory Day
A week earlier, Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin spoke with US President Donald Trump, during which he said he was ready to establish a ceasefire with Ukraine for Victory Day.
The Ukrainian side noted that Moscow is trying to secure its May 9 military parade in this way.
It's also important to add that Ukraine has not received any details from Russia about the ceasefire — at a minimum, no terms, modalities for halting hostilities, etc.
But on May 4, the Russian Defense Ministry publicly stated that Putin had ordered a ceasefire on May 8 and 9. It added that if Ukraine refuses to agree to the ceasefire, Russia will launch a massive missile strike on the center of Kyiv.
That same evening, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared that human life is a greater value than the celebration of any anniversary. Therefore, Ukraine announced a ceasefire starting at 00:00 on the night of May 5–6.
