Russia could restore its combat capability after a potential end to the war in Ukraine and be ready for new aggression as early as 2027, stated the commander of the Estonian Armed Forces, Andrus Merilo, according to ERR.
The Estonian military chief noted that the current war is unlikely to end in a way that leaves Russia entirely incapable of action.
He pointed out that Russia’s economy has already been put on a war footing and that the country maintains a massive army. In addition to imperial ambitions, the dictatorial regime in Russia directly depends on "keeping the country in a state of war."
Possible timeline for an attack
After exiting the war against Ukraine, Russia will begin rebuilding its military capability. At the same time, it is actively conducting intelligence activities and preparing new targets through destabilization efforts.
"In my opinion, 2027 is the year when Russia could restore its combat capability, and if it sees an opportunity to use force elsewhere, it will do so," Merilo stressed.
Russia is already laying the informational groundwork for a potential attack on the Baltic states. Moscow is dissatisfied with NATO’s presence in the region and with Ukrainian drones operating in Baltic airspace.
The United Kingdom and its allies are assembling a new naval strike force to counter Russia. London is closely watching Russian maritime provocations and is trying to be ready for immediate military action.
RBC-Ukraine also reported that Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk believes Russia could attack a NATO member state in the coming months rather than years. He also expressed doubts about whether the United States would respond adequately to such an attack.
