Macron to miss Zelenskyy's meeting with EU leaders
French President Emmanuel Macron will miss meetings with European leaders and the EU summit due to a natural disaster in France, according to Politico.
Macron will not attend today’s meeting in Brussels with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and leaders from Germany, Italy, Poland, Denmark, and the Netherlands, which is being organized by the NATO Secretary General in Brussels today.
Additionally, Macron will miss the European Union summit scheduled for December 19. According to NATO diplomats, who are not authorized to comment to the media, the reason was a natural disaster in France's overseas territories.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will represent Macron at the council "in accordance with established practice between France and Germany,” the French presidency said.
An anonymous official from the Elysée Palace added that the European Council’s conclusions were “pre-agreed,” leaving no “drafting issues” likely to arise.
“The French positions were included in the preparations phase,” the official noted.
Storm in France
The French overseas department of Mayotte was hit by the most powerful cyclone in the last century, Chido. Schools, hospitals, and residential buildings were destroyed in the archipelago's capital, and dozens of people are believed to have died.
Macron is scheduled to have a personal meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy today. It will take place in Brussels.
Zelenskyy left for Brussels today. During his visit, he may meet with the leaders of the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, NATO, and the EU.
At the same time, the President will attend the first meeting of the European Council after the appointment of its president.
Zelenskyy has previously announced that he will meet with leaders from several European countries in Brussels. He plans to discuss long-range capabilities and other issues.
