Zelenskyy urges global unity after ballistic strikes on Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reacts to morning attacks on Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia and urges pressure on Russia.
"Early this morning, the enemy carried out a ballistic strike on the center of Kyiv. Debris has fallen... My condolences to the families and loved ones. Residential buildings, a metro station, shops, cafes, and civilian infrastructure have been damaged. All services continue working to eliminate the consequences of the attack," the president stated.
He also reported that the attack on Zaporizhzhia injured 10 people, with individuals potentially trapped under the rubble. The attack destroyed infrastructure and damaged homes, shops, and other properties. The rescue operation is ongoing.
Zelenskyy called for increased pressure on Russia and those aiding its war against Ukraine.
"Everyone who helps the Russian state in this war must face pressure that is no less tangible than these strikes. We can achieve this only in unity with the entire world," the president emphasized.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha also responded to the attacks.
"Yet another proof that Putin wants war, not peace. He must be forced to accept a just peace through strength—maximum economic and military pressure," the minister wrote on X.
Attack on Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia
On the night of January 18, Russia launched a combined strike on Ukraine, firing four ballistic missiles and 39 drones. Ukrainian air defense forces shot down two missiles and 24 drones, while 14 decoy drones were lost on radar.
According to Ukraine's Air Force, the intercepted ballistic missiles fell in Kyiv's Shevchenkivskyi district, causing destruction. Three people were killed and three injured.
In Kyiv’s Lukianivka district, a metro station, buildings, vehicles, and a water supply system were damaged. Photos of Lukianivka after the attack can be found in RBC-Ukraine's report.
In addition, Russia attacked Zaporizhzhia in the morning. Ten people were injured, and the fate of three individuals remains unknown.
