Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is likely developing a strategy to negotiate with Russia without US assistance, Politico reports.
The media outlet notes that Zelenskyy, who over the past year had been actively seeking support from US President Donald Trump, appears to have stopped trying to persuade Washington to remain involved in negotiations with Russia to end the war.
Now, the Ukrainian president is likely working on a strategy to conduct talks without Washington’s help.
He has become more cautious about future US involvement and is now hoping that Turkey will host the next round of negotiations with Russia.
Peace talks
Recently, Trump stated that he continues to hold regular talks with Russian leader Vladimir Putin and Zelenskyy regarding ending the war.
According to him, the hatred between the leaders of the two countries is “madness.”
A few days ago, The New York Times reported that neither Ukraine nor Russia has a clear plan for either peace or victory. Without an active role from Washington and significant influence over the Kremlin, the prospects for reaching an agreement appear slim.
It is worth noting that several weeks ago, the head of the Presidential Office, Kyrylo Budanov, stated that peace talks between Ukraine and Russia are moving toward a deal. According to him, the process of fully resolving the war may not take long.
Recently, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said that Zelenskyy is ready to meet with Putin if the presidents of the United States and Türkiye also take part in the talks.
At the beginning of April, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated that his country is ready to host the next round of peace talks between Ukraine, the US, and Russia.
At the same time, Zelenskyy said that Ukraine is ready to hold a new round of negotiations with Russia in Azerbaijan.
