Ukrainian soldier discusses start of offensive on Sudzha
Ukrainian troops crossed the border into the Kursk region, Russia, on the night of August 6 with minimal resistance. They quickly reached the western outskirts of the city of Sudzha, according to the account of one of the invasion participants.
The soldier, identified as Tomash in the report, stated that his drone unit spent two days clearing the path for the incursion across the border.
He received the order to arrive at a designated location in the Sumy region but was unaware of the specific mission details.
According to Tomash, Ukrainian forces had preemptively suppressed enemy communication and surveillance systems to clear the way.
“The element of surprise worked. We entered easily with little resistance. On 6 August, the first groups crossed at night in several directions. Almost immediately they reached the western outskirts of the city of Sudzha,” he says.
He also shared his experiences with the local population. “The Russian civilians we encounter don’t resist. We don’t touch them, but they either treat us sharply, negatively, or not at all," the soldier notices. “They also deceive us about the positions of Russian troops,” he adds.
According to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, as of August 13, Ukraine had taken control of 74 settlements in the Kursk region.
On August 14, Syrskyi reported that the Ukrainian Defense Forces had completed their search and destruction of enemy forces in Sudzha.
Overall, Syrskyi stated that Ukraine now controls approximately 1,000 square kilometers of the border region in Russia.
