US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent criticized France's idea to hold NATO drills in Greenland, The Guardian reports.
The French administration said it wants to hold NATO drills in Greenland.
Bessent criticized the idea, saying that the "French budget is in shambles."
"If this is all President Macron has to do when the French budget is in shambles, I would suggest he focuses on other things for the French people," the US Treasury Secretary said.
France initiates NATO drills in Greenland
US President Donald Trump previously stated his intention to buy Greenland. According to the American leader, this is allegedly a matter of national security for the United States.
On January 14, media reports emerged that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had been tasked with preparing a proposal to purchase Greenland.
The American president also recently imposed tariffs on several European countries. According to him, these restrictions will remain in place until Europe agrees to sell Greenland.
At the same time, Trump recently refused to comment on the possibility of using force to annex Greenland to the United States.
Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said that a military conflict between Greenland and the United States is unlikely, but such a scenario cannot be ruled out. Island residents must be prepared.
He added that the Greenlandic government will form a working group involving representatives of all relevant local authorities to help the population prepare for possible disruptions to everyday life.
Meanwhile, the administration of French President Emmanuel Macron has initiated military drills in Greenland amid an escalation of the crisis around the island.
