The administration of French President Emmanuel Macron has initiated military exercises in Greenland amid escalating tensions around the island, Reuters reports.

"France has asked for a NATO exercise in Greenland and is ready to contribute to it," Reuters reported.

It is noted that the initiated military exercises were announced by the administration of the French president.

Situation around Greenland

Earlier, US President Donald Trump stated his intention to buy Greenland. According to the American leader, this is allegedly a matter of national security for the United States.

On January 14, media reports emerged that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had been tasked with preparing a proposal to purchase Greenland.

The American leader also recently imposed tariffs on several European countries. According to him, these restrictions will remain in place until Europe agrees to sell Greenland.

At the same time, Trump recently refused to comment on the possibility of using force to annex Greenland to the United States.

Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen also said that a military conflict between Greenland and the United States is unlikely, but such a scenario cannot be ruled out. The island's residents must be prepared.

He added that the Greenland government will form a working group with representatives of all relevant local authorities to help the population prepare for possible disruptions to daily life.

More details on how Trump is pressuring Europe are available in the RBC-Ukraine report.
