The United States may pay up to $700 billion to purchase Greenland. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has already been tasked with preparing an offer, according to NBC News.

According to three sources cited by the network, the estimated value of Greenland was calculated by researchers and former US officials as part of internal work on President Donald Trump’s push to buy the island.

The figure exceeds half of the Pentagon’s annual budget and reflects Trump’s national security priorities.

However, a senior White House official told reporters that Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been instructed to prepare a proposal to purchase Greenland in the coming weeks, calling the plan a “top priority” for Trump.

It is expected that today, January 14, Rubio and US Vice President JD Vance will meet with representatives of Denmark and Greenland who arrived in Washington to better understand Trump’s intentions and proposals.

“I’d love to make a deal with them. It’s easier. But one way or the other, we’re going to have Greenland,” Trump said earlier.

Meanwhile, Greenland’s foreign minister, Vivian Motzfeldt, said after arriving in Washington that Greenland does not want to be “owned, governed, or become part of the United States.”

“We choose the Greenland we know today — as part of the Kingdom of Denmark,” she said.

NBC News also reports that another scenario under consideration would have the United States and Greenland sign a so-called free association agreement. Such a deal would involve US financial assistance in exchange for permission for an American military presence.

Greenland purchase

As a reminder, on January 7, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that President Donald Trump wants to buy Greenland.

According to her, the US president has also not ruled out a military scenario as part of his plans to bring the island under US control.
