US President Donald Trump and his team are discussing a number of options for acquiring Greenland. The scenario of using the US armed forces is not ruled out, according to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt.
She says Trump has made it clear that the acquisition of Greenland is a national security priority for the United States and is vital for deterring adversaries in the Arctic region.
"The President and his team are discussing a range of options to pursue this important foreign policy goal, and of course, utilizing the U.S. Military is always an option at the Commander in Chief’s disposal," Leavitt stresses.
Trump's encroachment on Greenland
Earlier, in his statements, Trump's deputy chief of staff, Stephen Miller, targeted the acquisition of Greenland, a territory of NATO ally Denmark.
He said that the US has a right to Greenland and did not rule out the use of American military force to seize it.
Trump himself has repeatedly emphasized the strategic importance of Greenland for the United States.
"We do need Greenland, absolutely…surrounded by Russian and Chinese ships," he said.
As clarified by a White House representative, active discussions are ongoing in the Oval Office on possible mechanisms for gaining control over Greenland, with several alternative approaches being considered.
Against the backdrop of these statements, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that if the US attacks Greenland, it would mean the end of NATO.
Denmark also called on Donald Trump to stop threatening Greenland. The US, Copenhagen said, has no right to annex any of the countries of the Danish Kingdom.
