US confirms strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen
The US military attacked targets in areas of Yemen controlled by the Houthis on October 4. More than ten military facilities belonging to the militants were hit, according to the US Central Command (CENTCOM).
In a statement from the US military, it was noted that the strikes on Yemen were carried out on Friday at approximately 5:00 PM local time.
CENTCOM reported that US Central Command forces targeted 15 Houthi sites, which are supported by Iran, in areas controlled by the militants in Yemen.
"These targets included Houthi offensive military capabilities," the American command stated.
Additionally, CENTCOM explained that the operation aimed to protect freedom of navigation and to make international waters safer for US, coalition, and commercial vessels.
What preceded this
Yesterday Western media reported missile strikes in two cities in Yemen. Yemeni media associated with the Houthis stated that the capital, Sanaa, and the city of Hodeidah were targeted.
Later, the British edition of The Guardian reported that the strikes on Yemeni territory were carried out by US forces, hitting Houthi strongholds where weapon systems, bases, and other equipment belonging to the Iran-backed group were located.
Additionally, Houthi media reported that seven strikes targeted the airport in Hodeidah and the Katheib area, where a military base is situated. Another four strikes hit the Sayyan area in the capital, Sanaa, and two were launched in Dhamar province.
Houthi shelling and retaliatory strikes
Earlier reports indicated that at the end of September, the Israeli Air Force struck military targets belonging to the Houthis in Yemen. Before that, the Houthis launched a missile at Tel Aviv Airport. Additionally, on September 27, it was revealed that a Houthi missile attack aimed at Israel was intercepted by air defense systems.
It's important to note that the Yemeni Houthi group is allied with Iran, as well as organizations like Hamas and Hezbollah. Since last fall, they have been confronting both Israel and Western countries, including attacking commercial vessels.
US military forces and coalition allies regularly destroy Houthi drones and missiles that pose a threat in the Red Sea region.
Meanwhile, it has been reported that Russia plans to supply the Houthis with shipments of Yakhont anti-ship missiles, also known as P-800 Onyx.
