US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker stated that the threat of sending US troops to Iran is meant to ensure that US President Donald Trump "has all options" in the conflict, Newsmax reports.
The "threat or the ability" to send troops to Iran is about making sure President Donald Trump "has all the options necessary to prosecute this conflict," he emphasized.
Whitaker noted that, although no final decision has been made regarding the deployment of ground forces, the US presidential administration is ensuring that Trump "has maximum flexibility" in the event of an escalation with Iran.
"Ultimately, it is about making sure that the president of the United States has all the options necessary. If that includes the threat or the ability to bring land assets to the fight, then obviously, we're going to make sure that they're in place," the US ambassador said.
He added that Trump has not expressed expectations about "boots on the ground," but stressed that maintaining a credible military posture is key to achieving US objectives.
According to Whitaker, Trump’s goals remain unchanged: preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, dismantling its missile program, ending support for satellite terrorist groups, and ensuring that the Strait of Hormuz remains open for global trade.
At the same time, diplomatic efforts continue to resolve the conflict in the Middle East.
Conflict in the Middle East
On March 22, US President Donald Trump issued an ultimatum to Iran, demanding that the Strait of Hormuz be opened within 48 hours. He stated that if the demand was not met within that timeframe, US forces would begin bombing Iranian power plants.
In response, Iran warned that any attack on its fuel and energy infrastructure would prompt strikes against US energy, information technology, and desalination facilities in the region.
On Monday, March 23, Trump announced that he had ordered US forces to suspend strikes on targets in Iran. Following this announcement, Brent crude oil prices dropped sharply, while US stock futures rose by more than 2%.
Later, Trump said that Washington and Tehran are negotiating an end to the conflict and already have "important points of agreement."
At the same time, the Pentagon is preparing for the potential deployment of US ground forces in Iran. Thousands of Marines are currently being sent to the Middle East.
