Tehran has responded to US threats to destroy Iran’s power plants if the Strait of Hormuz is not reopened within 48 hours. The retaliatory threats proved to be more extensive, according to Al Jazeera and The Wall Street Journal.

Iranian military officials responded that if their energy infrastructure is struck, a strike will be carried out against the energy, information technology, and desalination infrastructure of the US in the region.

The WSJ notes that while oil and gas reserves support the region’s economy, millions of people in the Middle East rely on desalination plants for drinking water. The Middle East accounts for more than 40% of the world’s desalination capacity, or about 5,000 facilities.

Strait of Hormuz

Several hours ago, US President Donald Trump wrote on his Truth Social that he was giving Iran 48 hours to unblock the Strait of Hormuz; otherwise, the US would destroy Iran’s power plants.

Iran blocked the Strait of Hormuz at the beginning of the war, triggering a major oil crisis. As a result, fuel prices also spiked in the US, and Washington began making efforts to unblock the strait.

Trump even called on NATO allies to help him reopen the Strait of Hormuz, but they refused, which drew outrage from the US president.
