On Saturday, September 5, a meeting took place in Moscow between Trump's special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner and Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Further steps to achieve peace in Ukraine were discussed, according to report by Axios journalist Barak Ravid on social media platform X and a post by Reuters journalist Steve Holland.
"Witkoff and Kushner met with President Putin to advance President Trump's agenda of peace in the Russia-Ukraine War... The two sides discussed substantive plans for next steps, which will be announced in the coming weeks, and look forward to equally productive meetings tomorrow in Ukraine," wrote Ravid, and this information was confirmed by Holland.
Both journalists cited an unnamed White House representative. This source clarified that the US delegation also included representatives of the National Security Council, the State Department, and the Treasury Department to discuss proposals for ending the war.
At the same time, the Treasury Department representative did not participate in the negotiations with Putin, but spoke with Putin's envoy Kirill Dmitriev. Presumably, the topic of discussion was US sanctions against Russia.
"Gene Lange, the acting sanctions czar at the Treasury Department, joined Witkoff & Kushner on the trip. Lange participated in a preparatory meeting with Putin envoy Kirill Dmitriev but didn’t attend the meeting with Putin," reported Barak Ravid.
Peace negotiations
At present, with US mediation, the process of attempting to resume peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia has begun again in an effort to end the war launched by Moscow.
The first meeting of the US with the Russian side took place on Saturday, September 5. The second meeting will be with Ukrainian representatives today, September 6.
After the negotiations in Moscow, aide to the Russian leader Yuri Ushakov said that the conversation lasted more than three hours and was substantive and constructive.
He reported that the American side had formulated a whole range of considerations regarding exiting the war, but also added that Trump's envoys promised to use the assessments expressed by Putin in negotiations with Ukraine.
