Following talks between US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and European allies, a working group will be established to develop a draft of security guarantees for Ukraine. The group will be headed by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, according to the Wall Street Journal.

According to sources cited by the publication, the future security guarantees for Ukraine will include four key components:

  • military presence
  • air defense systems
  • arms supplies
  • mechanisms for monitoring the ceasefire

It is possible that the United States may provide indirect military support to European peacekeepers without deploying American troops on Ukrainian soil.

Security guarantees for Ukraine

Security guarantees for Ukraine were one of the key topics of the meeting in Washington, which took place yesterday, August 18. Earlier, Trump stated that Vladimir Putin had agreed to the guarantees.

According to him, such an agreement could deter any future aggression against Ukraine. However, it remains to be determined which European countries can take on a significant part of the burden. At the same time, the United States is ready to provide a high level of security guarantees.

In addition, when asked whether the guarantees could involve a potential presence of US troops on Ukrainian territory, Trump said he could not answer that question at this time, but in any case, the US would be involved in the process.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that the guarantees would be formalized within the next ten days and noted that his draft of security guarantees involves 30 countries belonging to the Coalition of the Willing.
