Ukraine expects to finalize a framework agreement on security guarantees with the US following the World Economic Forum in Davos, according to the Financial Times.
Based on media reports, Ukrainian Ambassador to the US Olha Stefanishyna announced that Kyiv and Washington plan to sign a key document on Ukraine's economic recovery and prosperity next week. The signing will occur in Davos and concerns the $800 billion reconstruction deal for Ukraine.
The FT also notes that agreeing on security guarantees has been more complicated, but Ukraine hopes to sign this agreement shortly after Davos as well.
The media says that finalizing a separate agreement on security guarantees has proved more challenging, but two Ukrainian sources said they hoped to agree on general terms, which will be signed in Washington shortly after Davos.
Security guarantees for Ukraine
In early January, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the bilateral US-Ukraine security guarantees document is nearly ready. He emphasized that the next step is finalizing the agreement at the highest level.
On January 13, Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukraine continues to work with the US on security guarantees and reconstruction, noting that signing could happen soon.
"We continue to prepare documents with the US regarding security guarantees and reconstruction. We are working in a way that will allow signing and legal approval in the US Congress and the Ukrainian Parliament very soon," he said.
Also, the Ukrainian leader said he expects to receive a timeline for US security guarantees during his meeting with President Donald Trump.
Ukraine is discussing guarantees on land, air, and sea with its partners. Reports indicate that the UK and France are considering sending up to 15,000 troops to Ukraine if a peace agreement is reached.
The Financial Times also reported that during Davos, Ukraine's G7 allies plan to meet with Trump to secure his personal support for the security guarantees. According to sources, no troops will be deployed without US approval.
