Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has suggested that a new meeting with US President Donald Trump could take place “in the near future.” During that meeting, the US leader may provide an answer regarding the timeline for security guarantees for Ukraine, according to Zelenskyy’s comments to journalists.
Zelenskyy noted that the key issue currently under discussion — including at the level of national leaders — is security guarantees. On January 6, following a meeting in Paris, a briefing was held on this matter.
“Yesterday there was a fairly detailed briefing from our generals — from France, Britain, the United States, and Ukraine. Hnatov is handling this on our side, the Chief of the General Staff. In principle, all the details are being coordinated between the countries… There is support, weapons, presence — there are answers to all these questions,” he said.
However, the president added that he is not ready to publicly comment at this time on the progress of discussions regarding US security guarantees extending beyond 15 years. He explained that during a meeting in December at Trump’s residence in Mar-a-Lago, after Zelenskyy raised this issue, Trump took a pause.
“In December at Mar-a-Lago, I raised this issue — the President of the United States took a pause on it and said they would consider it. I think I will meet with him in the near future. I believe I will have a meeting in Washington, or possibly elsewhere. We’ll see what plans the US president has. And I think there I will be able to get an answer to this question,” Zelenskyy concluded.
It should be recalled that on December 28, 2025, Trump hosted Zelenskyy at his residence in Mar-a-Lago, Florida. The talks lasted nearly three hours, after which the leaders also spoke with European partners. Following the meeting, Trump said that the war was nearing its end. Zelenskyy, for his part, stated that a 20-point peace plan was 90% agreed upon, and that security guarantees for Ukraine were fully agreed.
At the same time, on January 6, a meeting of Ukraine, the United States, and countries of the so-called Coalition of the Willing took place in Paris. During the meeting, Ukraine, France, and the United Kingdom also signed a declaration on the creation of a joint coordination group. Later, security documents are expected to be finalized at the level of national leaders. The main priorities are security guarantees and Ukraine’s post-war recovery.
As for the details, Zelenskyy has already disclosed that Ukraine is discussing security guarantees with its partners on land, in the air, and at sea. There is no discussion of deploying a nuclear umbrella over Ukraine. There is also still no clear answer as to whether Europeans would respond militarily if Russia were to attack again.
