Tusk sees possible start to Ukraine-Russia peace talks this winter
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk believes peace negotiations to end the war between Ukraine and Russia could begin as early as this winter, according to Reuters.
During a government meeting, the Polish Prime Minister said that after Poland's EU presidency begins on January 1, he will "have a series of talks concerning primarily the situation beyond our eastern border".
"As you can imagine, our delegation will be co-responsible for, among other things, what the political calendar will look like, perhaps what the situation will be like during the negotiations (to end the war between Ukraine and Russia - ed.), which may, although there is still a question mark, start in the winter of this year," Tusk said.
Tusk also mentioned that French President Emmanuel Macron is scheduled to visit Warsaw on December 12 to discuss his recent talks with US President-elect Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Paris.
The prime minister also clarified that he is in constant contact with the Scandinavian and Baltic countries. In the first days of Poland's EU presidency, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is scheduled to visit Warsaw.
"I really want Poland to be the country that will not only be present but will set the tone for these decisions that are to bring us security and secure Polish interests," Tusk stated.
Trump’s inauguration
On January 20, Donald Trump will officially become the new President of the United States. He is likely to deal with the issue of ending Russia's war against Ukraine.
During a meeting with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy in September, Trump emphasized his desire for a "fair deal for everybody" in the context of the war in Ukraine.
Recently, he called for an immediate ceasefire and negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.
