US President Donald Trump stated that he is ready to help Ukraine with security guarantees, as this is a necessary factor for implementing a peace agreement, according to a White House broadcast.
During a conversation with the press, journalists recalled that in July, Trump pledged to Europe that the US would take part in a peacekeeping contingent if a peace agreement were reached.
“You mentioned, I think, air support, intelligence, and so forth. Does that commitment still stand? Is the US ready to contribute to this?” a reporter asked.
The US President’s response was positive.
“This is called the security agreement, basically, that they call the security agreement. Yeah, we would help. We would help with security because it's, I think, a necessary factor in getting it done,” the American leader said.
At the same time, the White House chief believes that the current peace agreement is not favored by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“I thought that we were very close with Russia to having a deal. I thought we were very close with Ukraine to having a deal. In fact, other than President Zelenskyy is people loved the concept of the deal,” Trump said.
He added that the document consists of four or five different parts, and the process is difficult because it concerns territories.
On December 13, Ukraine, the US, and the EU will hold negotiations in Paris regarding the disputed points of the plan. However, Trump has still not given a clear answer on whether American representatives will attend the meeting.
“Well, there's a meeting on Saturday. We'll see whether or not we attend the meeting. We said we'll attend the meeting if they think there's a good chance that they want me to attend. They want us to attend, and we'll be attending the meeting on Saturday in Europe if we think there's a good chance. And we don't want to waste a lot of time. We want it to get settled,” the US president said.
In addition, Trump once again stated that the US has given Ukraine around 300–350 billion dollars but received nothing in return. However, with his return to power, a result was achieved.
“I ended up getting rare earth in return, even though I didn't spend money. And we are now selling weapons to NATO. We're selling weapons at full price to NATO. They distribute those weapons probably to Ukraine for the most part,” he said.
The White House chief added that the US is taking part in the war and in the negotiations because Ukraine and Europe want Washington’s involvement.
According to Trump, the war in Ukraine does not affect the US unless everything spirals out of control. Because otherwise, such situations end in world wars. But Washington does not want that.
US peace plan and security guarantees
Active work on the peace plan is underway between Ukraine, the US, and European partners. According to President Zelenskyy, the parties are discussing three key initiatives: a framework document, a security guarantees agreement, and a document outlining the principles of post-war reconstruction.
Notably, yesterday, the President of Ukraine reported that Washington has already handed Kyiv a draft on security guarantees, which the parties will continue working on.
At the same time, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Moscow expects security guarantees for all sides, adding that Russia will not accept Ukraine’s NATO membership.
