During a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Donald Trump assured his counterpart that Washington would continue its support for Ukraine, according to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

According to people familiar with the conversation between the two leaders, Trump told Zelenskyy that he had ordered a review of the Pentagon's ammunition stockpiles following US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities last month. However, he did not instruct the Department of Defense to halt arms shipments to Ukraine.

As WSJ reminds, the call took place after the American leader expressed frustration and disappointment over the lack of progress toward a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia during a phone conversation with Russian president Vladimir Putin on Thursday, July 3.

"Trump assured Zelenskyy that the US will send as much military aid as it can spare, the people said. But the shipment remains on hold, according to a Pentagon spokesman," WSJ adds.

Suspension of US aid to Ukraine

At the beginning of July, it became known that the United States had suspended certain weapons shipments to Ukraine. These include:

  • Patriot missile interceptors

  • AIM-120 surface-to-air missiles

  • Howitzer shells

  • AGM-114 Hellfire missiles

  • GMLRS rockets for HIMARS systems

  • Stinger anti-tank missiles and grenade launchers

According to the US State Department, Kyiv was allegedly warned in advance about the suspension of assistance.
