First details of Trump-Zelenskyy call

Today, July 4, the presidents of Ukraine and the United States, Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Donald Trump, had a phone call. Their conversation took place amid a pause in the supply of some key types of American military aid to Ukraine.
First details from Yermak
Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Andriy Yermak said that the talks between the presidents had already taken place.
"A very important and substantive conversation between the presidents. All details - very soon," he noted.
Western media reports
Axios correspondent Barak Ravid, citing an unnamed source, wrote that the call between Trump and Zelenskyy lasted about 40 minutes.
The journalist’s interlocutor stated that the conversation "good."
Ravid also clarified that the leaders discussed the escalation of Russian strikes on Ukraine and the supply of air defense systems to protect against Russian attacks.
What Zelenskyy says
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the conversation with US President Donald Trump was very important and fruitful.
The Ukrainian head of state congratulated the American leader and the American people on US Independence Day.
Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine is grateful for all the assistance provided by the United States, which helps to preserve people's lives and independence. According to him, a decent deal for peace is needed now, and Ukraine supports Washington's proposals.
Zelenskyy said that one of the topics of discussion was the situation at the front and Russian strikes on Ukraine.
"President Trump is very well informed, and I thank him for his attention to Ukraine. We spoke about opportunities in air defense and agreed that we will work together to strengthen protection of our skies. We have also agreed to a meeting between our teams," he added.
The leaders also discussed in detail the capabilities of the defense industry and the idea of joint production.
"We are ready for direct projects with the United States and believe this is critically important for security, especially when it comes to drones and related technologies," the President of Ukraine said.
During the talks, the parties discussed mutual procurement and investment. The Presidents of Ukraine and the United States exchanged views on the diplomatic situation.
Topics
The call was organized amid the suspension of American defense support. As Zelenskyy announced before the conversation with Trump, Ukraine is counting on continued assistance from the US - primarily missiles for Patriot air defense systems.
The pause in US aid
On July 1, reports began to spread in Western media about the US halting the supply of certain types of weapons to Ukraine. Later, the White House confirmed this information, explaining the pause as a priority of US national interests.
Several outlets, citing sources in the administration and the Pentagon, reported that the US suspended the supply of artillery shells, Stinger, Patriot, and Hellfire missiles. Notably, even shipments already stored in Poland were put on hold.
Reacting to the situation, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine is conducting talks with Washington to clarify all the details.
Meanwhile, the Pentagon stated that it is providing President Donald Trump with expanded options regarding military aid to Ukraine. The State Department emphasized that the United States has not suspended all arms deliveries.
More details about the pause in US military support can be found in a separate RBC-Ukraine article.
Trump spoke with Putin earlier
A day before his conversation with Volodymyr Zelenskyy - on July 3 - the US president spoke with the Kremlin chief. Their conversation lasted about an hour.
After the call, the US president said he was dissatisfied with the position of the Russian leader, that no progress was made in ending the war, and that he was disappointed with Putin, who, in his view, does not want to end the conflict.
"I'm very disappointed with the conversation I had today with President Putin, because I don't think he's there, and I'm very disappointed. I'm just saying I don't think he's looking to stop, and that's too bad," Trump told reporters.
Meanwhile, the Kremlin reported that during the conversation with the American president, the Russian leader emphasized that he would not abandon his goal of "eliminating the causes of the conflict in Ukraine." Trump reportedly demanded a swift end to the war, but Putin is in favor of seeking a "negotiated solution to the conflict." The issue of arms supplies to Ukraine and the continuation of Ukraine-Russia talks in Türkiye was not raised.
Moscow cynically commented on the suspension of US arms deliveries to Ukraine. Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that "the fewer missiles coming from abroad, the closer the end of the special military operation," hinting at alleged problems in the US defense industry and a redirection of supplies to Israel.
Earlier, the Kremlin also insisted on halting Western arms supplies to Ukraine as a condition for starting ceasefire talks.
When Trump and Zelenskyy last spoke
The previous conversation between the presidents of Ukraine and the US took place on June 25, 2025, during the NATO summit in The Hague.
After talking with Zelenskyy, Trump said he would consider the possibility of supplying Patriot missiles to Ukraine.
He called the nearly hour-long meeting "very pleasant," although he noted that he and the Ukrainian counterpart had "hard times" in the past.
For his part, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the conversation with Trump as substantive. According to him, during the discussion, they "covered all the truly important issues." The key topic of the Trump-Zelenskyy talks at the NATO summit would be Ukraine’s purchase of weapons from the United States.
