US President Donald Trump believes that NATO should not be part of security guarantees for Ukraine, French President Emmanuel Macron said, reports Le Monde.

"President Trump expressed this clearly in these exact words. He even said things that are very important to me: the fact that NATO should not be part of these security guarantees, and we know that this is a strong argument, especially for the Russian side," Macron said.

At the same time, according to him, the United States and other allies of Ukraine should be part of these guarantees.

The French president also added that during negotiations, Trump noted that he wanted the United States to be able to achieve a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia during the Alaska meeting.

"We support this initiative, as well as the exchange of prisoners and the release of children," Macron said.

Conversation between Zelenskyy, Trump, and European leaders

Ahead of US President Donald Trump's meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15 without the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, concerns were expressed in Europe that the fate of Ukraine and European security could be decided there.

Therefore, European leaders together with Zelenskyy held a videoconference with the US president today, August 13.

According to French President Emmanuel Macron, Trump said he wanted to reach an agreement with Putin on a ceasefire in Ukraine.

Zelenskyy also revealed details of the conversation with Trump and European leaders.

In particular, during the discussion, five joint principles regarding ending Russia's war against Ukraine were agreed upon.
