US President Donald Trump supports the start of peace talks between Russia and Ukraine based on the current line of contact, according to Andriy Yermak, head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.

The possible options for a ceasefire during negotiations with Russia were discussed at a White House meeting.

According to Yermak, a discussion was held during which positions voiced by Russian dictator Vladimir Putin in his conversation with Trump were also mentioned.

When asked to clarify whether the Russian position was merely conveyed, Yermak said it was presented but stressed that the Russian stance does not reflect the position of the United States.

"They presented it. However, the Russian position is not the United States' position. The US position — and Trump made this clear — is that negotiations must start from the current line of contact," Yermak said.

He emphasized that, as in the case of Gaza, no negotiations are possible without a ceasefire.

"Russia must not be allowed to continue the war under the cover of negotiations, thereby slowing down the introduction of new sanctions and the increase of assistance to Ukraine," the head of the Presidential Office added.

Trump, Ukraine, and Russia’s positions

As a reminder, last week, US President Donald Trump met with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Washington, after previously holding a phone conversation with Kremlin head Vladimir Putin.

After the meeting, Trump stated that Zelenskyy and Putin should end the war within the current territorial boundaries and reach an agreement.

"Let both claim Victory, let History decide! No more shooting, no more Death, no more vast and unsustainable sums of money spent," Trump emphasized.

Zelenskyy supported the US President's words, stressing that he is ready for any format that could bring peace closer.

However, Russia has already rejected Trump’s proposal. According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Moscow does not want a ceasefire.

Today, Zelenskyy once again emphasized that Ukraine is ready for negotiations in any format. The priority remains achieving a just and lasting peace, and to do so, pressure on the aggressor must be intensified.
