Russia will not agree to a ceasefire with Ukraine until the so-called root causes of the conflict are resolved, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said, according to Russian media.

Lavrov responded to the calls of US President Donald Trump to stop the war in Ukraine along the current front line. According to him, Russia will not agree to a ceasefire until the so-called root causes of the conflict are resolved.

"Calls for a ceasefire right now, without eliminating the root causes of the Ukrainian conflict, contradict what Putin and Trump agreed upon in Alaska," Lavrov said.

The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry also voiced another Kremlin narrative, stating that "an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine would mean only one thing – most of Ukraine would remain under the control of Nazis (a propaganda term used by Russia to label the Ukrainian government and military)."

In addition to his statements regarding a possible ceasefire, Lavrov hinted at preparations for a new round of talks between the leaders of Russia and the United States.

According to him, during his communication with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, they discussed the current situation and possible steps to organize another meeting between Putin and Trump.

Meeting between Rubio and Lavrov

Earlier, CNN reported that the scheduled meeting between Rubio and Lavrov this week had been postponed. It is unknown why the meeting will not take place this week.

Meanwhile, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that there had been no agreement on a meeting between Rubio and Lavrov.

Meeting between Trump and Putin

It is known that Trump called Russian President Vladimir Putin ahead of his meeting with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Washington.

After that, Trump announced he would meet with the Kremlin leader again, this time in Budapest.

The meeting date between the US and Russian leaders is not yet known. However, as Trump previously said, the talks will take place within the next two weeks.
