Zelenskyy backs Trump's call for Ukraine and Russia to 'stop where they stand'

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded to US President Donald Trump’s remarks on the need to stop the war, emphasizing that Ukraine is ready to engage in any format that could help achieve peace, according to his statement.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy supported US President Donald Trump’s call to stop the war, saying both sides should "pause where they are" and begin dialogue to build a lasting peace.
"For the sake of our nations and under the circumstances we’re in now, I think we need to stop where we stand. Trump is right, it’s important to stop this and then start talking," Zelenskyy said, emphasizing that the next step should be negotiations among various leaders and groups to secure a durable peace.
He added that while he agrees with Trump’s stance that both sides must stop, "the question lies with Putin; we didn’t start this war." Zelenskyy reaffirmed his readiness to participate in "any format that could bring Ukraine closer to peace."
White House meeting
The remarks followed Zelenskyy’s October 17 meeting with Trump at the White House, where the Ukrainian leader highlighted Kyiv’s need for Tomahawk missiles and proposed a defense agreement with the US.
Before the talks, Trump said he planned to discuss the war’s progress and Ukraine’s intentions regarding possible offensive operations, noting that Kyiv "wants to advance on the front line" and that he would make a decision on the matter personally.
