Russia is trying to sow discord among Ukrainian politicians. After that, the Kremlin plans to resume the war with even greater force, Bloomberg reports.

An anonymous source told the outlet that Ukrainian intelligence services believe Russia’s key goal is to pit all Ukrainian politicians against each other if a presidential election takes place. According to the source, after an initial destabilization, Russia would launch a second strike - resuming the war with triple the force following a change in power.

Bloomberg notes that, in theory, elections could be held, but only if the US and other allies deploy troops to patrol the front line after a ceasefire - a scenario President Donald Trump has ruled out.

Trump's statements and Europe's reaction

Recently, US President Donald Trump supported the Kremlin’s version of events in Ukraine, claiming that President Zelenskyy's approval rating is allegedly only 4%. He also expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that elections are not being held in Ukraine during the war, calling Zelenskyy "a dictator without elections."

Trump's comments provoked an immediate and strong response from European leaders.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz rejected Trump’s remarks about Zelenskyy, calling them wrong and dangerous. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre also reacted, labeling such statements as deeply unfounded.

It’s worth noting that, under Ukrainian law, elections are prohibited during martial law. Furthermore, according to public opinion polls, the majority of Ukrainians are against holding elections during the war.
