North Korea prepares to blow up roads to South Korea
North Korea is preparing to blow up roads connected to South Korea. This could happen as early as Monday, October 14, according to Yonhap.
According to the spokesperson for South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), Lee Sung Joon, the military detected that North Korea is installing coverings along the roads in preparation for explosions.
"It is possible for (North Korea's explosions) to take place as early as today," he said.
The spokesperson noted that North Korea may carry out explosions along the inter-Korean roads or other provocative actions. However, he emphasized that South Korea will not provoke and will deliver a "resolute response."
"If North Korea undertakes a provocation, we will strongly retaliate in terms of our right to self defens," said the military official.
Conflict between the Koreas
The conflict between North Korea and South Korea escalated last week. Pyongyang accused South Korea of launching drones. North Korea promised retaliation and stated that it would prepare "all means of attack."
North Korea has blocked road and rail links connecting to South Korea. Pyongyang has also put its artillery on the border with South Korea on combat readiness.
Seoul, in turn, responded firmly to North Korea’s threats and warned of a decisive response.
The US is sending Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell to South Korea due to the threat of escalation between the countries.
