Moldova becomes first country to sign security agreement with EU - Borrell
On Tuesday, May 21, Moldova signed a security agreement with the European Union, becoming the first country to conclude such an agreement with the EU, according to the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell.
"Moldova is the first country to sign a Security and Defence Partnership with the EU. This partnership will enhance the country's resilience," informed Borrel.
According to him, the agreement will allow "to jointly address common security challenges, make our engagement more effective, and explore new areas of cooperation".
Moldova's EU accession
On December 14, 2023, at a summit in Brussels, the European Council supported the start of negotiations on Ukraine and Moldova's accession to the EU.
On December 24, President Maia Sandu proposed to the parliament to organize a referendum on Moldova's accession to the European Union. She stated that it could be held in the autumn of 2024 when presidential elections are to be held.
Recently, the Moldovan parliament approved the date of the referendum on the country's EU accession. It will take place on October 20, 2024.
