Leaders of several countries persuaded Donald Trump to abandon a strike on Iran. They assured the US president that a new agreement was already effectively ready, according to Politico.
After public threats from the American leader to strike Iran, representatives of Gulf countries and South Asia contacted him.
According to sources cited by the outlet, Trump was contacted by the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the United Arab Emirates Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and Pakistan’s Defense Minister Asim Munir.
The politicians attempted to dissuade the US president from military escalation. During the calls, they assured him that a preliminary agreement opening the way for more detailed negotiations had already been reached.
It was precisely these arguments from the leaders — that a peace deal was truly close — that led Trump to change his intentions and abandon plans to strike Iran.
Recall that Trump had announced on the evening of June 11 a very strong strike on Iran. He also said the US would, in the future, seize Kharg Island and Iranian oil infrastructure facilities.
Later, the American president stated that the US would not carry out strikes on Iran due to progress in the negotiation process.
Donald Trump also said that the US had supposedly ended the war with Iran, adding that Tehran had agreed never to obtain nuclear weapons.
In addition, the US president noted that a corresponding document between the countries could be signed in the coming days.
