Kyiv reassesses Trump’s stance on Ukraine security guarantees – Bloomberg

US President Donald Trump was sincere in his efforts to work out security guarantees for Ukraine during talks at the White House, Bloomberg reports.
“This time, Ukrainian officials felt Trump was sincere in the meeting about his desire to help with security guarantees,” a person close to the Ukrainian government told the media outlet.
According to an unnamed representative of the Ukrainian side present at the negotiations in the US, such a position by the American President could open new opportunities for reaching a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia.
Security guarantees for Ukraine
Security guarantees for Ukraine were one of the key issues at the meeting in Washington on August 18. Earlier, Trump had already stated that Vladimir Putin had agreed to such guarantees.
According to the US President, this kind of deal could deter any future aggression against Ukraine. However, it still needs to be determined which European countries are “going to take a lot of the burden.” At the same time, the United States is ready to provide a high level of security guarantees.
When asked whether the guarantees could involve the potential presence of US troops on Ukrainian soil, Trump replied that he could not answer that yet, but in any case, the United States would be involved in the process. Just a few months ago, Trump had emphasized in his speeches that Europe should take on Ukraine’s security guarantees.
Meanwhile, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that the guarantees would be formalized within the next ten days, noting that 30 countries of the Coalition of the Willing are participating in his draft security framework.
