"The leaders (of the G7- ed.) agreed to increase pressure on Russia, particularly through sanctions targeting the oil and gas sectors," a diplomatic source said.
The European Union approved a new package of sanctions against Russia targeting the military-industrial complex, the shadow fleet, and the aggressor state's hybrid networks.
In addition, following its annual review, the EU extended the restrictive measures imposed in response to the illegal annexation of Crimea and Sevastopol. The sanctions will remain in force at least until June 23, 2027.
Ukraine's Presidential Commissioner for Sanctions Policy, Vladyslav Vlasyuk, said that the new EU sanctions package demonstrates a systematic approach to weakening Russia's war machine, emphasizing that the restrictions target not only direct weapons manufacturers.
Brussels has also recently prepared a 21st sanctions package targeting key sectors of the Russian economy, including energy, financial services, trade, cryptocurrencies, and fisheries.
Among the new measures is a ban on entry to the EU for former Russian military personnel involved in the aggression against Ukraine. At the same time, work is ongoing to impose individual sanctions on around 80 additional Russian companies and individuals.
