European countries are ready to provide Ukraine with security guarantees on the day a peace agreement with Russia is signed, states French President Emmanuel Macron during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Paris.

"We, Europeans, are ready to provide guarantees to Ukraine on the day peace is signed. This is what was stated in Washington. The work that was assigned to us has been done, and today we can say: we are ready to give political support to these agreements," Macron said.

According to him, after the talks in Washington, the allies are prepared to ensure stable conditions for peace in Ukraine.

"Now everything depends on Russia, whether it is ready for the conditions under which it proposed peace in America," the French president noted.

Security guarantees for Ukraine

On August 18, a meeting was held at the White House between US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and European leaders. The allies discussed security guarantees for Ukraine.

Following the meeting at the White House, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the details of the guarantees were expected to be agreed upon within 10 days. However, the timeline was later pushed back by another week.

On August 25, US President Donald Trump publicly assured that Europe would provide "significant" guarantees, and the US would stand in support of these commitments.

Meanwhile, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni proposed to European leaders a plan to provide security guarantees to Ukraine in the format of collective assistance, which does not involve NATO membership.

At the same time, the European Union defined its role in Ukraine’s security guarantees. This includes training and civilian missions, as well as the involvement of neutral states.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that Ukraine’s partner countries have developed a clear roadmap on the issue of providing security guarantees.

In recent days, Zelenskyy also outlined three key pillars of security guarantees for Ukraine. These include maintaining the army, cooperation with NATO countries, and sanctions against Russia.

He also stressed that Ukraine needs legally binding security guarantees from key European countries and the United States of America, not another Budapest Memorandum.

In addition, tomorrow, September 4, leaders of several European countries will meet in Paris to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine.
