US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth stated that a possible ceasefire with Iran does not imply any concessions regarding Tehran’s armaments. According to him, a condition for peace is Iran’s complete renunciation of nuclear weapons, according to Hegseth’s statement during a press conference at the Pentagon.
He emphasized that Iran must "never, ever possess" a nuclear arsenal.
"Under the terms, any nuclear material they should not have will be removed," he added.
Hegseth noted that Iran’s nuclear facilities are under round-the-clock aerial surveillance. He also stressed that US President Donald Trump had made his position clear from the outset, "There will be no Iranian nuclear weapons."
"The president has been clear from the beginning, there will be no Iranian nuclear weapons, period, full stop," the defense secretary emphasized.
In addition, the Pentagon chief said that Iran must no longer be able to produce missiles, launchers, or drones. According to him, the relevant facilities have been leveled to the ground.
Two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran
Earlier, Donald Trump stated that the United States is ready for a two-week ceasefire with Iran if a peace agreement can be reached during that time. In response, the Iranian side promised to restore shipping in the Strait of Hormuz for two weeks.
At the same time, in an interview with Sky News, Trump warned that Washington is ready to return to hostilities if the agreement does not meet US conditions.
Meanwhile, Iran has already reported a violation of the ceasefire following a strike on an oil refinery on Lavan Island in the south of the country.
