Lithuania’s Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas stated that after peace is achieved, the country could send several hundred of its troops to Ukraine, LRT reports.
"I can’t provide exact details yet; we are still discussing this. We will certainly contribute to security guarantees, (…) and in the event of peace, this could involve several hundred troops," he said.
Kaunas emphasized that he did not want to reveal specifics about how Lithuania might assist in providing security guarantees for Ukraine.
"Everything is very dynamic. I wouldn’t want to highlight anything that could later appear misleading — you can see for yourselves how the geopolitical situation is changing in different directions,” the Lithuanian minister said.
He added that the most important thing is the collective effort of all countries to achieve and ensure peace in Ukraine.
Security guarantees for Ukraine
On January 6, talks were held in Paris with the participation of Ukraine, the United States, and the Coalition of the Willing regarding security guarantees for Ukraine as part of a peace agreement.
Ukraine’s allies plan to take on concrete binding commitments that would apply in the event of new Russian aggression. These provisions are included in the draft Paris Agreement on security guarantees for Ukraine.
Representatives of Ukraine and the US within the Coalition of the Willing also agreed on specific steps to implement and monitor a ceasefire, though further progress depends on Russia, which has yet to confirm its willingness to comply.
Meanwhile, Germany has expressed readiness to support a potential ceasefire in Ukraine, but without taking on obligations to deploy troops.
Belgium is prepared to provide air and naval support to ensure Ukraine’s security after the war ends.
In addition, Canada is also considering deploying its troops in Ukraine if a peace agreement is reached, with the country’s initial contribution potentially being the training of Ukrainian military personnel.
