This is currently only a potential option, and participation in multinational forces will have a much greater effect than if they acted alone.
Carney says that Canada's initial contribution to Ukraine's security guarantees could be training Ukrainian military personnel. He also recalled that Canadian soldiers are already conducting training in Poland as part of Operation Unifier.
According to the Canadian Prime Minister, the government's efforts to build military capacity will help Canada play a meaningful role in ensuring Ukraine's security after the war ends.
He also notes that Canadian Chief of the Defense Staff General Jennie Carrigan has been in talks with coalition colleagues for some time regarding security guarantees for Ukraine.
Security guarantees for Ukraine
On Tuesday, January 6, a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing at the leadership level took place in Paris. Following the meeting, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and France signed a declaration of intent to deploy forces on Ukrainian territory.
In addition, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that military hubs would be established throughout Ukraine after the ceasefire.
Jared Kushner, son-in-law of US President Donald Trump, said that Ukraine and the US had resolved most of the issues regarding security guarantees.
Kushner stressed that the security guarantees had been developed over the past month in consultation with Ukrainians and Europeans. At the same time, the meeting of the Coalition of the Willing, according to him, was a major milestone in such negotiations.
Following a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing in Paris, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni ruled out sending Italian troops to Ukraine as part of security guarantees.
At the same time, Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever said that his country was ready to contribute to ensuring peace in Ukraine after the end of the war.
