Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is traveling to The Hague for talks with Dutch leadership, according to the Dutch government.

On Tuesday, December 16, Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Dick Schoof, members of the government, and will have an audience with the King of the Netherlands.

According to the Dutch government website, in the afternoon, the Dutch Prime Minister will hold a working lunch with Zelenskyy at Catshuis. The talks will also involve Foreign Minister David van Weel and Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans. The sides plan to discuss the progress of peace initiatives, the security situation in the region, and further military, political, and humanitarian support from the Netherlands to Ukraine.

After this, Zelenskyy will be received by His Majesty the King at Huis ten Bosch Palace in The Hague. The meeting with the monarch is largely symbolic and underscores the high level of support for Ukraine from the Dutch state.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Schoof will participate in an international ministerial conference dedicated to the establishment of an International Claims Commission for Ukraine. The event will take place at the World Forum in The Hague and is organized by the Council of Europe in cooperation with the Netherlands. Foreign Minister David van Weel will also attend.

The creation of the International Claims Commission is seen as a key mechanism to hold Russia accountable for damages caused to Ukraine as a result of the full-scale war.

Dutch support for Ukraine

The Netherlands is an active European ally of Ukraine, providing military, humanitarian, and financial assistance.

For example, in late October, the Netherlands announced €25 million for equipment, emergency repairs, and gas purchases for Ukraine.

Additionally, the Netherlands decided to allocate a further €250 million under the PURL initiative (Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List) for the purchase of weapons from the United States and their delivery to Ukraine.

On December 8, it was also announced that the Netherlands will provide an additional €700 million ($815 million) in military support to Ukraine in the first quarter of 2026.
