On Monday, 15 December, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will arrive in the German capital for an unexpected visit, Morgenpost informs.
The outlet notes that the Ukrainian leader will visit Berlin for a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Representatives from the United Kingdom and France will participate, along with possibly those from Poland and Italy.
It remains unknown whether representatives of the US government will be present at the meeting.
US peace plan
The US recently presented a peace plan that initially consisted of 28 points. Some of them were openly pro-Russian. It proposed significant concessions from Ukraine — withdrawing troops from the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, reducing the size of the army, abandoning NATO membership, and more.
The initial plan was unacceptable not only to Ukraine but also to Europe. In particular, Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said he had been in contact with US officials regarding adjustments to the plan.
Amid the development of the peace plan, Ukraine’s and the US negotiation teams held several meetings. They took place in Switzerland and the US. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that as a result of this dialogue, the plan was reduced to 20 points — the initial peace proposal was effectively shortened.
On Wednesday, 10 December, it became known that national security advisers from Ukraine, France, Germany, and the UK had developed and submitted to the US their own vision of the American peace plan.
Axios reported that on 13 December, Ukraine, the US, and the EU will hold talks in Paris due to disputed points in the US plan.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt later stated that US President Donald Trump is already tired of "meetings for the sake of meetings," so the US will send its representative to the negotiations only if there is a real possibility of signing a peace agreement.
Before that, The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump had demanded European leaders pressure Zelenskyy to accept the US peace plan.
