Through the new PURL defense support initiative, Ukraine managed to raise $1.5 billion to be spent on weapons purchases for Ukraine, according to President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

"Our new defense-support PURL initiative with partners is already bringing tangible results. As of today, we already have $1.5 billion pledged," Zelenskyy said.

Thanks to the NATO Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List initiative, allies can cooperate to purchase US-made weapons for Ukraine. This is a mechanism that strengthens Ukraine's defense.

"So far, the Netherlands contributed $500 million, a joint pledge from Denmark, Norway, and Sweden – $500 million, and yesterday Germany added another $500 million. That’s a very real boost, and I thank Germany for this important step," the president added.

He also emphasized that negotiations and discussions with other countries are ongoing.

"Every contribution under PURL is a direct investment in our ability to defend our people’s lives and bring a dignified peace closer," the head of state added.

New US and NATO initiative

The United States and NATO have launched a new mechanism for providing military assistance to Ukraine through the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative.

The initiative stipulates that all the American weapons that Ukraine will receive will be paid for by European countries. Ukraine will receive 500 million euros worth of American weapons. The supplies will be financed by the Netherlands.

Latvia has also recently announced that it is ready to join the new NATO initiative to finance American weapons for Ukraine.
