Following that, Zelenskyy will take part in a special meeting of the Group of Seven (G7) leaders, A strong and sovereign Ukraine, on the sidelines of the summit.

G7 summit in Canada

The G7 summit, attended by the leaders of the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the European Union, and the United Kingdom, began on June 16 in the Canadian province of Alberta. The meetings will last until the end of today.

This year's summit is focused on the situation in the Middle East, the war between Russia and Ukraine, and security in the Indo-Pacific region.

It marks the first G7 summit for US President Donald Trump during his second term. Notably, the President left the summit early. His administration explained that the reason for this step was the situation in the Middle East.

Trump had been expected to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the summit. Zelenskyy had earlier said he planned to discuss a defense package Ukraine is prepared to purchase from the US.

Despite his early departure, Trump made several remarks during the summit, including on the war in Ukraine.

He called Russia's expulsion from the G8 a mistake, suggesting that if Russia had remained in the group, it might not have launched its invasion of Ukraine.

Trump also said he is holding off on new sanctions against Moscow, as he is waiting to see whether a possible deal to end the war can be reached.
