German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that together with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, he had addressed US President Donald Trump regarding negotiations with Russia, according to Clash Report.

"We have informed President Trump together with President Zelenskyy that we are ready for peace talks. However, these talks must begin at the right point," Merz stressed.

He also called Russia’s demand that Ukraine give up part of the Donbas "unacceptable."

On June 4, Volodymyr Zelenskyy published an open letter to the Russian dictator proposing a meeting in a third country to discuss the terms of a lasting peace.

The initiative was addressed simultaneously to the Kremlin leader, representatives of the Russian elite, and Ukraine’s international partners.

In response, Vladimir Putin criticized the proposal, claiming the letter had a harsh tone, and rejected personal talks, saying that he "saw no point" in them.

At the same time, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stressed that Putin had effectively lost the opportunity to exit the war, which is becoming increasingly unsuccessful for Russia, while international pressure on Moscow continues to grow.

For his part, the US president stated that the Russian President is now in a weaker position regarding the war against Ukraine than he was previously.
