Progress in talks to end the war in Ukraine is expected in the coming weeks. This was aided by a large-scale prisoner exchange, in which both sides returned 1,000 people each, states the US special envoy for peace, Steve Witkoff, according to his Twitter (X).
According to Witkoff, the return of a thousand people was made possible by extended trilateral talks in Geneva involving the US.
He emphasized that the process is being overseen personally by US President Donald Trump.
"Under the President’s leadership, we continue to achieve meaningful outcomes while working towards formulating a peace deal that will end the war once and for all," the special envoy said.
Predictions for the end of the war
Witkoff expressed optimism about ongoing diplomacy. He said that work on the final document is underway, and new results could be announced in the near future.
"Discussions remain ongoing, with additional progress anticipated in the weeks ahead," he added.
The US diplomat also thanked the Swiss government for providing the platform for these discussions.
Peace initiatives and the positions of the parties
Recently, diplomatic activity around ending the war has significantly increased. In particular, US President Donald Trump stated that Ukraine and Russia are at the top of his list of priorities.
At the same time, the American leader has criticized Ukraine’s leadership, calling Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy an "obstacle" to achieving peace.
Earlier reports indicated that negotiations in Abu Dhabi were put in doubt due to the Ukrainian president’s position.
Zelenskyy himself confirmed that direct talks with Russia have been postponed for now, but Kyiv continues to await constructive steps from its international partners.
