US President Donald Trump discussed security guarantees for Ukraine with European allies based on NATO principles.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to its own sources and CNN.

An unnamed European official said that part of the talks with US President Donald Trump focused on security guarantees for Ukraine under the principle of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, supported by Europe and the United States, in the event of a peace agreement.

At the same time, the European official noted that NATO itself would not be involved in the guarantees. The exact details of the proposal remain unknown, and it is unclear how these guarantees would be implemented.

A source of RBC-Ukraine confirmed that this issue was indeed raised during the conversation. It was described as "Non-NATO Article 5 security guarantees," meaning security guarantees similar to Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty concerning "collective defense," but not within NATO itself.

In particular, the American side proposed such a security guarantee, allegedly agreed upon with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. It was first voiced by the Americans during talks with Zelenskyy, and later repeated in a joint conversation with European leaders.

What is known about Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty

Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty is NATO's key principle, which defines collective defense.

It declares that an armed attack against one or more member states in Europe or North America is considered an attack against all members. In such a case, each member state is obliged to assist the attacked party by taking measures it deems necessary, including the use of armed force.

For the first time in NATO's history, the provisions of Article 5 were invoked after the terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001.

Security guarantees for Ukraine

As a reminder, earlier French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot stated that during the August 15 meeting in Alaska, Trump would demand that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin agree to a ceasefire and would promise security guarantees to Ukraine together with other partners.

Before that, French President Emmanuel Macron said that Trump believes NATO should not be part of the security guarantees for Ukraine.

According to media reports, Trump is ready to provide security guarantees to Ukraine, but not within the NATO framework.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio claimed that security guarantees for Ukraine and territorial concessions should become part of peace talks with Russia.
