Vance 'optimistic' on peace in Ukraine after Rubio's threats to pull out of talks

U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance said he is "optimistic" that peace will be achieved in Ukraine. He said this after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio threatened to withdraw from the talks, Sky News and Reuters report.
Vance made the statement during a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Rome.
"Since there are the negotiations I won't prejudge them, but we do feel optimistic that we can hopefully bring this war, this very brutal war, to a close," said J.D. Vance.
The US Vice President noted that "even in the past 24 hours, we think we have some interesting things to report on."
A few hours earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that US President Donald Trump would abandon mediation between Russia and Ukraine within a few days if there were no clear signs that a deal could be made.
Negotiations on Russia's war against Ukraine
Ukraine and Russia are not directly negotiating over the war in Ukraine. However, the negotiation process continues with the mediation of the United States. Washington is using so-called shuttle diplomacy for the negotiations.
One of the first steps that the Trump administration is trying to implement is a truce between Russia and Ukraine. The Ukrainian government has agreed to accept a proposal for a 30-day ceasefire, but Moscow continues to set conditions.
Also, with the mediation of the United States, Ukraine and Russia agreed to mutually cease attacks on the energy sector. However, Russia does not adhere to the agreement and continues to violate the truce.
Trump recently issued a ceasefire ultimatum to Vladimir Putin. According to Trump, he expects a response from Russia this week.
