US State Department: We expect embassy in Ukraine to resume operations tomorrow
The US Embassy in Ukraine is likely to resume operations as early as tomorrow. Staff members of the diplomatic mission will return to their workplaces, according to a briefing by US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller.
He recalled that the US had observed a serious threat of an attack on Kyiv, which led to the suspension of the embassy’s operations.
"Obviously, I can't get into the specifics of the threat, but it's something that we always monitor closely. We take the safety and security of our personnel very... it's very important for us, we take it extremely seriously. And that's what led to the temporary change in posture today, and we expect it to resume normal operations tomorrow," Miller emphasized.
He also clarified that there had been no reduction in embassy staff.
"So, there's people who were going to come to the office, that did not come to the office today, and we expect them to come tomorrow," the State Department spokesperson said.
Suspension of embassy operations
Earlier today, November 20, the US Embassy in Ukraine announced a temporary suspension of its operations.
According to a source in the US Embassy cited by RBC-Ukraine, this decision was related to a potential threat of a combined Russian attack, similar to the events of November 17.
However, the source stressed that the suspension was not connected to Russia’s decision to amend its nuclear doctrine.
