On Monday, June 22, the first round of negotiations between the US and Iran on a final peace agreement concluded in Switzerland. They took place in a positive and constructive atmosphere, progress was made, and the parties reached a number of agreements, citing a post by Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on social media platform X and CNN.

According to the statement, the US and Iran have agreed to establish a High-Level Committee to ensure political oversight of the mediation.

In particular, the lead negotiators will report regularly to the committee and will also head working groups dealing with nuclear issues, sanctions, a monitoring group, and dispute resolution to ensure the effective implementation of the framework agreement.

Additionally, the countries reached a number of further agreements:

  • A roadmap for finalizing a comprehensive agreement between the US and Iran within 60 days has been agreed upon;
  • Technical negotiations on all issues will continue until the end of this week in Switzerland;
  • The US and Iran have agreed to establish a coordination center for conflict resolution, including a ceasefire in Lebanon.

What Iran says

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that sanctions on Iranian oil had been lifted, and some of Iran's frozen assets abroad had been unfrozen. However, he did not provide any further details.

Iranian media also reported that Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei stated that Iran initially refused to continue the negotiations that began on Sunday. The reason for this was the threats made by US President Donald Trump.

In particular, Trump said on Fox News that the US could seize the Strait of Hormuz and also threatened the Iranian delegation.

"You close it and you won’t have a country. You won’t even make it back to your f**king country," Trump said.

US and Iran

Recently, Newsweek reported that the majority of US citizens are skeptical of the US-Iran agreement. Americans do not believe that the current diplomacy will bring the country any strategic benefit.

According to preliminary estimates, the war against Iran cost the Pentagon $40 billion. This also included economic losses for ordinary citizens.
